How to Create a Strong Password You Can Actually Remember

Productivity · 6 min read · Published March 2025

Practical password advice that actually works — no pseudo-science, no "change it every 90 days" nonsense.

What makes a password strong

Length beats complexity. A 16-character passphrase of random words is stronger than an 8-character password with symbols.

The passphrase method

Pick four random words. Add a number and a symbol. "correct-horse-8-battery!" would take centuries to brute force and is easy to type.

The rule you must follow

Never reuse passwords across sites. A breach on one site should never give attackers access to your email, bank or social accounts.

Use a password manager

Bitwarden, 1Password and Dashlane all have free tiers. A manager lets you use a different random password on every site.
