How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality (2025)

Image · 6 min read · Published March 2025

A practical guide to reducing image file sizes for faster websites and easier sharing — without sacrificing visible quality.

Why image size matters

Images account for 50–80% of page weight on most sites. Compressing them is the single highest-impact speed fix you can make.

Lossy vs lossless

Lossy (JPG, WebP) throws away invisible data. Lossless (PNG) preserves everything. For photos use lossy. For logos use lossless.

  • Photos → JPG or WebP at 75–85% quality
  • Screenshots of text → PNG
  • Icons → SVG when possible
  • Everything else → WebP

The two-step workflow

First resize to the maximum dimensions you will display. Then compress. Resizing does far more than compression alone.
